My hand poured candles are made in my small kitchen here in Johnson City, Tennessee.

The wax I use is EcoSoya™ soy candle wax, an all natural 100% soybean wax that received the prestigious Lois Tellefson Award for the development of new techniques and innovations in candle making, given by the International Guild of Artisans. This wax has no beeswax or petroleum products hidden in it. The soybeans are not treated with pesticides or herbicides and are not genetically modified in any way. The soy candle making process produces a healthier candle.

The soybeans are grown in the United States by American Farmers and the minerals they release in the soil enhance the soil to support another crop the next season. To make a pure soybean wax, the beans are crushed to produce soybean oil, which is then purified. The oil is hydrogenated and enhanced with botanical oils to create a pure soy wax for candle making. I do not add any chemicals or additives to my wax which makes it carbon neutral. My oils are natural and essential that has been produced from natural herbs, plants, flowers, sugar and citrus.

Key Facts:

  • Made containing NO Genetically Modified Material

  • Manufactured meeting FDA and Kosher standards

  • Very stable allowing for long shelf life

  • Clean up with soap and hot water eliminating solvents

  • Non-toxic which means it’s safe for children and pets.

  • Soy keeps the scent in layers which means fragrance will burn evenly from top to bottom.

  • Safer to handle

  • Burns 50% longer than paraffin wax

  • Bio-degradable which means less in landfill sites

  • Free from releasing petroleum toxins into the air

  • Less likely to trigger allergies

  • Produces little smoke than that of regular candles; this is caused from the wick I use to maintain the extreme amounts of oil I put in there to make them fragrant. Because soy is a soft wax it requires a thicker wick to be able to produce a good melting pool (the melted wax around the flame that releases the scent).

  • Paraffin wax candles release carcinogens into the air; while burning it is similar to that of diesel being burned by a truck.

  • The use of soybeans not only supports our American farmers, but it also contributes to the reduction of our dependency of crude oil.

  • By using the soybean in various ways, we our promoting the care of our environment by utilizing plants that are not depleted.

  • Once wax is almost gone out of the jar, it’s best to blow out the flame to prevent smoking or blackening of the jar.

Please note that all my candles are homemade and poured by me. We have been very picky and I am always striving or testing to improve the scent coverage from one candle. I have recently changed waxes to produce even more scent but, had to sacrifice the smoothness/creaminess of the other soy wax I was using. Because we are switching to the tins to make it easier for such long distance shipping, your candles may have a rougher appearance on the top or “frosting”. “Frosting” is a white, chalky, vein like appearance and is a crystal growth of vegetable oils. The white marks are simply a characteristic of that crystal structure similar to the white marks found on chocolate.

When working with any natural wax like soy, you will have this type of natural occurrence that is unavoidable without putting additives in the wax. The lack of additives may cause the appearance to be rougher, but keeps our candles at a low cost, healthier for you and does not affect the fragrance or burn life of the candles. Many customers are concerned if there is not frosting on their soy candles because it’s a great way to tell if it’s really made with pure, all-natural soy wax. Most soy candle manufacturers often add paraffin wax (called Para-blend) to eliminate frosting. If you don’t see it, then you know extras have been added to your candles therefore not 100% Soy Candles as they claim. Things like changes in weather, humidity, sunlight and fluorescent lighting can increase the frosting.

A not so smooth top on a flat surface lets you know the soy candle was poured by human hands and with lots of patience and love. Appearance is not always the key to having a fantastic and intoxicating scented candle! Double HH Candles is aware that there are many potential hazards in using lead wicks. Our candles are 100% lead free and made right here in the good ole USA! We use NO other additives beyond color and fragrance.

Candle Safety

My candles are made to burn evenly but here are some tips and safety precautions to ensure longer burn time and the safest, most efficient way to burn them. Each of my candles will have warning labels properly placed on the bottom to ensure responsibility to the buyer.

  1. Probably one of the most important things to remember is to place your candles on a protected, heat resistant surface, away from anything flammable or combustible Even though my candle tins have little raised feet underneath, it is recommended you place it on something else besides direct contact. Please place candles out of the reach of children and pets.

  1. Wick Trimming: This is the best way to insure that your candle burns more efficiently. This will help prevent smoking or too large a flame and helps keep residue from the sides of your container.  Before each burn, please trim the wick to 1/4" and after its extinguished use a nail clipper or long sheers to trim the small mushroom or bulb that remains on the wick. These are caused by our packing it to the max with wonderful fragrances.

  1. Burn Your Candle No More than 4 hours at a time.  Our containers are metal and just like any candle, does get hot. Please use common sense when touching or moving your candles.

  1. Once you light your soy candle, remember that soy candles have a memory. This means it remembers how far across the surface it melted before you extinguished it. To achieve the best results, let your candle completely melt across the top before extinguishing. This will prevent the candle from having a tunnel down the center of the container.

  1. For safety reasons, it is best to discontinue use when there is 1/4" of wax remaining in the container.  This will prevent heat damage to the container and the surface it is placed on.

  1. ALWAYS EXTINGUISH A CANDLE BEFORE LEAVING THE ROOM NEVER LEAVE A CANDLE UNATTENDED!  DO NOT GO TO SLEEP WITH A CANDLE BURNING IN ANY ROOM!

  1. DO NOT USE IF CONTAINER IS CRACKED OR CHIPPED. This goes for any candle you may purchase whether it is at a retail store or mine.

  1. Extinguish candle before replacing the lid. NEVER EXTINGUISH A CANDLE WITH WATER AS IT MAY CAUSE HOT WAX TO SPATTER.
